How the math works

LTV is the most over-quoted, least-understood number in ecommerce. Most stores quote a gross LTV that ignores margin entirely, then wonder why a 1:1 LTV:CAC ratio is killing them.

  1. 01

    Project lifetime revenue

AOV × orders per customer per year × years retained. This is gross LTV — the revenue a customer generates before any cost is deducted.

  2. 02

    Apply your gross margin

Multiply by gross margin %. An $80 AOV at 50% margin is only $40 of contribution per order — not $80.

  3. 03

    Compare to CAC

LTV after margin ÷ customer acquisition cost. Above 3 means you can grow profitably. Below 1 means you're paying more than you'll ever earn back.
